Bush Aide: Wisconsin Casino Plan Needs Review

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jan. 25, 2001 – As reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune: "Amid speculation about when and how the Bush administration will rule on high-profile tribal casino projects, a member of the president's transition team said Wednesday that more time is needed to review proposals in Hudson and Kenosha, Wisconsin

"…Wisconsin American Indian tribes and their non-Indian partners want the federal government to convert land at the St. Croix Meadows dog track in Hudson and the Dairyland dog track in Kenosha to mini-reservations for tribal casinos.

"Timing could be critical if the Bush administration signs off on the proposals because they also would require the approval of the Wisconsin governor. Gov. Tommy Thompson soon will leave office to become secretary of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

"Both casino developers and opponents regard him as more likely to approve a casino than would be his successor, Lt. Gov. Scott McCallum, who says he opposes more casinos.

"…In the final hours of the Clinton administration last Friday, non-political appointees of the Interior Department's Bureau of Indian Affairs removed a hurdle facing the Hudson casino by ruling that it would have no adverse impact on the community.

"…While not ruling out a decision this week or next, Tom Fulton [a special assistant to the incoming secretary of the Interior Department], said the casino proposals are among items inherited from the Clinton administration to be reviewed…"
