Broward County Slots Delayed

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the Florida Sun-Sentinel: "Slots aficionados may have a long wait before they can play in Broward County.

"House and Senate negotiators have yet to reach a compromise on how to carry out the constitutional amendment approved in a statewide vote last fall and again by Broward voters in March. That dims the hopes of a special legislative session in the coming months.

"The points of contention remain the same as last spring. Legislators still cannot agree on a taxation rate, the number of machines that will be allowed in each of the four pari-mutuel facilities and whether the players will get bingo-like machines or Las Vegas-style slots.

"…That angers Sen. Steve Geller, D-Hallandale Beach, one of the staunchest proponents of expanded gambling. 'The Republican leadership of the Legislature is treating the constitution and the will of the voters as advisory opinions,' he said…"
