British Entertainers Push to Change Casino Law

31 May 2001

UNITED KINGDOM As reported by the (U.K.) Times: "The entertainment industry is canvassing the Government's Gambling Review Body to change the law that bans casinos from offering its punters live entertainment.

"Representatives of more than 100,000 singers, dancers, comedians and other entertainers have written to Sir Alan Budd, chairman of the GRB, claiming that the ban, introduced in the late 1960s, had `cost our members many thousands of job opportunities over the years'.

"…Among those to support the repeal of the ban on entertainment is Rank Group, which recently won a licence to open its first Hard Rock casino in the UK. A spokesman for Rank said it was keen for the law to change to enable it to offer `appropriate' entertainment not only in its Hard Rock casino but also in its Grosvenor casinos.

" `The planned opening of the Hard Rock casino accentuates the irony of the current situation,' said the spokesman. `It would be a music-themed casino without the music.'
