British Columbia Casino Not Welcomed by Neighbours8 July 2003LANGLEY, British Columbia – As reported by the Vancouver Sun: “A proposed $44 million casino in Langley city is not welcomed by residents of neighbouring Langley township, that muncipality's mayor said Monday. “Mayor Kurt Alberts, of Langley township, won't be speaking out tonight at the city's public hearing on Gateway Casino's pitch for a hotel, convention centre and casino with 300 slot machines, but he expects some township residents will go into the city to express their opposition. “The township of Langley completely surrounds the smaller city of Langley. Although the city and district are two separate municipalities, Alberts said they often function as one community. And he said Langley township does not want a casino in Langley city because it would be too close to the township. “`There are probably many reasons why we don't want a casino, but a lot of it has to do with [gambling] not being part of the image that Langley township is pursuing,’ Alberts said in an interview. `If you're thinking of tourism and that sort of thing, we would put more reliance on agro-tourism, sports tourism and perhaps even cultural tourism.’ “…Langley city Mayor Marlene Grinnell refused to disclose Monday whether she personally supports or opposes the Gateway Casino proposal. “…Grinnell didn't answer directly when asked whether Langley township's opposition to the casino was enough to persuade the city to reject the casino proposal…” |
