British Bookmaker Offers Lines on National Football League

12 July 1999

Sportingbet.com (www.sportingbet.com) says it's the first British Internet betting company to offer regular National Football League lines. It plans to add Major League Baseball soon.

Sportingbet.com (www.sportingbet.com) says it's the first British Internet betting company to offer regular National Football League lines.

"We see the American market as one which will enjoy the security of betting with a fully regulated British licensed company,'' said Mark Blandford, in a recent statement. He's managing director of NetBet plc, the British firm that's the parent company of NetBet.

"This heralds the start of an exciting new phase in our program to provide a global online bettering service,'' Blandford said. "We expect to extend the service even further by offering lines on Major League Baseball in the next few weeks.''

Sportingbet.com was launched in August 1998. The company says it's the only tax-free betting firm based in the British Isles.

Blandford spent 14 years as a licensed British bookmaker. Last year, he sold his land-based shops to concentrate on sports wagering in cyberspace.

NetBet is licensed to operate in Alderney, one of the United Kingdom's Channel Islands. Regulators require funds to be held in clients' fund accounts until, and if, the money is actually won by the bookmaker. That helps to assure that bettors will be paid when they cash out, the company says.
