British Bookies Go Upmarket13 August 2001LONDON –– As reported by the Guardian: ``Betting shops, long the smoke-filled refuge of men in anoraks, will be given a £40m makeover this autumn as Ladbrokes plans to open Hilton Hotel-style cafes in store. ``Ladbrokes, which is owned by Hilton, is to open 40 betting superstores on UK high streets to take advantage of the new, relaxed tax-free gambling regulations being introduced on October 6. ``…The opening of Ladbrokes' Trafalgar Square shop in London is expected to coincide with the start of tax-free betting in October. ``It will feature a version of Hilton's Cafe Cino concept, offering relatively upmarket food and drink. ``The move is designed to make betting shops more attractive, particularly to women…" |
