Boyd Veteran to Keep Title as Borgata CEO

12 March 2002

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Having labored for three-plus years with a $1 billion baby, there's no way Bob Boughner is going to put the Borgata up for adoption next year. The 26-year veteran of Las Vegas and Boyd Gaming Corp. is going to become one of us, choosing to stay on as the casino's permanent chief executive officer when it opens.

"…`I've worked with this every step of the way. There are very few people who get to say that from the very beginning they've taken responsibility of $1 billion invested in a building, created an organization, been involved in all aspects of design and construction and created a value proposition for the customer. And at this point in my career I couldn't see walking away from it and handing the keys to someone else,' he said.

"Boughner was the No. 2 executive at Boyd Gaming, where he's worked since 1976. He has relinquished his titles of senior executive vice president and chief operating officer, but will remain a Boyd director and member of the management committee.

"The company is expected to announce today that Keith Smith, who was executive vice president of operations, will succeed Boughner. Smith, 40, is a 12-year Boyd veteran.

"…Boughner, 49, is a Boyd lifer, having joined the company while still a student at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

"…Last fall, Boughner began to assemble the Borgata operating team. He indicated then that he would be the top boss at least temporarily but was noncommittal about who would take over for good…"
