Boyd Promotes Keith Smith to COO

13 March 2002

LAS VEGAS – (Press Release) -- Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE: BYD) recently promoted Keith Smith, 40, to its Chief Operating Officer post. He will have the primary responsibility for the operation of the Company's 12 wholly-owned casino properties. Mr. Smith was previously the Executive Vice President of Operations, which he was appointed to in 1998.

Keith Smith originally joined Boyd Gaming in 1990 as the Corporate Controller and has nearly 20 years of experience in the gaming industry. The position became available when Robert L. Boughner, previously the Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, decided to continue after its scheduled opening in 2003 as Chief Executive Officer of The Borgata, the Company's $1 billion Atlantic City development with joint venture partner MGM Mirage.

Commenting on the appointment, William S. Boyd, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming, said, ``Keith has done an excellent job overseeing our operations for the past three years, and his promotion reflects our continued focus on building each of our 12 businesses and growing outside of new development opportunities.''

Headquartered in Las Vegas, Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE: BYD) is a leading diversified owner and operator of 12 gaming entertainment properties located in Nevada, Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana and Louisiana. Boyd Gaming is also developing The Borgata, a $1 billion entertainment destination resort in Atlantic City, through a joint venture with MGM Mirage.
