Boyd Gaming Donates $54,000 to National Center for Responsible Gaming

2 October 1998

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Boyd Gaming Corporation has donated $54,000 to the National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG), the first nationwide source for funding scientific research on disordered gambling behavior.

William S. Boyd, chairman and CEO of Boyd Gaming, recently presented the check to Maj. General Paul Harvey (Ret.), chairman of the NCRG board, at the Silver Star Resort and Casino in Philadelphia, Miss. Boyd serves as president of the NCRG board.

The funds, which will be devoted to research, were derived from money remaining in progressive slot machines housed at Sam's Town Casino in Kansas City, Mo., a site recently sold by Boyd Gaming.

Boyd helped establish the NCRG two years ago with other gaming industry executives. The NCRG receives support from 17 gaming entertainment companies. "The gift is great because it's going toward a national federation," Boyd said.

Harvey, former executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, hailed the gift as a move in the right direction in the fight against problem gambling, which has been acknowledged by the gaming and health care sectors as a treatable mental health disorder. "This is the responsible approach to people who can get in trouble with this type of entertainment," Harvey said. "I have great respect for the industry for stepping up to the plate to address this problem."

Since 1996, the NCRG has awarded nearly $1.5 million to leading research universities and medical centers. The NCRG is affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
