Boundary Dispute Stops Louisiana Casino21 February 2001BATON ROGUE, Louisiana – Feb. 21, 2001 –As reported by the Louisiana Advocate: "The state Gaming Control Board decided Tuesday to let the courts decide whether a proposed video-poker truck stop on U.S. 90 is located completely within St. Martin Parish. "Attorneys for the state contend that at least one acre of the Cajun Casino's 5.4-acre site is actually in Lafayette Parish, where voters agreed to outlaw video poker. By contrast, St. Martin Parish voters opted to continue video-poker operations. "Late last year, hearing officer William Brown of Baton Rouge ruled in favor of the truck stop, noting that it had been considered to be in St. Martin Parish for more than 100 years. "…On Tuesday, the Gaming Control Board voted 5-3 to overturn Brown's decision. "…The board's decision means the Cajun Casino will have to take its case to court to get a video-poker license. "Cajun Casino is a business name for Triple Diamond LLC, owned by Victoria Scott, who also owns the Delta Downs race track in Calcasieu Parish. "State Police denied the application based on aerial maps that suggest part of the property is in Lafayette Parish, where video poker is illegal. "But Cajun Casino's attorney, Brett Sulzer, said official land surveys show his clients' parcel is completely in St. Martin Parish…" |
