Boston Tracks Face Hurdle21 January 2003MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Business Today: "Boston-area racetrack owners face a new obstacle in a coalition of hostile state lawmakers even as they lobby hard on Beacon Hill for the right to roll out thousands of slot machines. "A group of 10 legislators, including state Rep. Reed Hillman (R-Sturbridge) and Sens. Guy Glodis (D-Worcester) and Michael Knapik (R-Westfield), is expected to fire off a broadside today against aggressive efforts by track owners seeking to turn their longtime racing operations into `racinos.' "…If Boston track owners build `racinos' packed with thousands of slot machines, the lawmakers warn, major casino companies may lose interest in building large resorts in other areas. "…The salvo by the group of lawmakers drew a swift response from Gary Piontkowski, owner of the Plainville horse track. Piontkowski said several horse farms in Western Massachusetts depend on his racetrack for business…" |
