Boston Mobster's Seized Lottery Winnings May be Legitimate

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Feb. 13, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: "Reputed Boston mobster and fugitive James `'Whitey' Bulger may have a legitimate claim to $1.9 million in lottery winnings that the government seized in 1995.

"In documents filed in federal court, prosecutors say Bulger's former top deputy Kevin Weeks has debunked earlier government claims that Bulger paid the real winner $700,000 for a one-sixth share in the $14 million Mass Millions jackpot in 1991, according to The Boston Globe.

"…The government seized Bulger's share of the jackpot in July 1995, six months after he was indicted on federal racketeering charges and fled.

"…An FBI affidavit in the case cited informants who said he paid ticket holder for the lottery share as part of a money-laundering scheme to get a legitimate source of income.

"But in the new disclosure filed in federal court, prosecutors cite Weeks as saying a longtime associate of Bulger's, Patrick Linskey, purchased 16 tickets for the 1991 jackpot as Christmas gifts.

"When Linskey's brother Michael won the jackpot with one of the tickets, the brothers agreed that Michael Linskey would get half the jackpot, and Patrick Linskey, Bulger and Weeks would split the other half.

"..Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Hoffman wrote in the filing that the government is still entitled to keep Bulger's winnings…"
