Bookmaking Crackdown Extends to San Francisco Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Jan 28, 2001 -- As reported by the The Fresno Bee: ``Fresno County sheriff's vice detectives' pursuit of illegal bookmaking operations led to two Bay Area cities Saturday, where two prominent bookmakers were detained.

``…The investigation was revealed Jan. 14, when sheriff's detectives shut down several illegal bookmaking operations in Fresno and Clovis homes. Betting slips and markers, cash, drugs and handguns were seized, said Hagler, leader of the vice unit. Information from those raids led detectives to San Carlos and San Bruno.

``Assisted by local police departments and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department, Fresno sheriff's detectives closed two bookmaking operations.

``At one location, Hagler said, detectives posing as bookmakers took more than $100,000 in bets by telephone…"
