Bookies Lose Big with Scandinavian Draw

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Scotsman: "Bookies were in a fix tonight after Euro 2004's all Scandinavian tie sent Italy crashing out of the tournament.

"Punters had bet heavily that Denmark and Sweden would play for a 2-2 draw to eliminate the Italians on goal difference.

"It came after the Italians complained that the neighbouring nations might provide a two-all stitch up to knock them out – in fact the match was hotly contested.

"William Hill said tonight they had lost a fortune on the tie despite cutting the odds to the bone.

"…The bookies had been offering the 2-2 scoreline between Denmark and Sweden at odds of just 7/2, the shortest odds they have ever quoted for that outcome in a competitive match.

"…In the build-up to the game the Scandinavian's had strenuously denied suggestions of a pact to play for a draw to eliminate Italy…"
