Bodog.com Posts Odds on Team USA

21 June 2006

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Facing possible elimination, it's all or nothing for Team USA as it heads into Saturday's World Cup match against Italy. Can the Americans silence critics and pull out a miracle win to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the second round of the world's biggest sports tournament? The odds say no as Bodog.com bookmakers have the Italians favored at -250.

"Even with Team USA's poor start in the tournament, we are seeing an overwhelming amount of betting action from U.S. based bettors," says Calvin Ayre, Founder and CEO of Bodog.com. "There are a number of formidable teams that appeal to sports fans, and as the tournament progresses, we're expecting even greater interest."

For fans of Team USA, interest will be at a peak for the team's second World Cup game. After his squad failed to score a goal in a lopsided 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic on Monday, U.S. coach Bruce Arena has been questioned about his ability to motivate his team. A tactical switch is needed in order for the Americans to compete with Italy, a team that has beaten them in each of their previous three matches. The U.S. will need to be aggressive in attack yet staunch on defense, a tall order considering they did little of either against the Czechs.

The Italians also have room to improve. Although they beat Ghana 2-0 in their opening Group E match, the Italians were not overly impressive. They do have the fortune of facing a U.S. team that has scored only eight goals in its last nine World Cup games dating to 1998.

With a massive North American fan base for both teams watching live, Bodog.com has posted its odds for this crucial match:

Italy: -250

United States: +600

Draw: +300

How are odds to win the World Cup shaping up? Brazil is now a 2/1 favorite with England, which advanced to the round of 16 on Thursday, at 6/1. Germany and explosive Argentina, both at 13/2, are also considered top contenders.
