Bill proposed to make Victoria Casinos smoke-free

2 February 2001

MP Susan Davies has escalated her campaign for the State Government to ban smoking at casinos. Officials from Trades Hall, the Quit campaign and the anti-gambling lobby offered support to Davies as she called on Premier Steve Bracks to reconsider his opposition to her private member''s Bill to ban smoking and move ATMs farther from gamblers'' reach. Ms Davies said she believed smoking would be banned in all public places eventually and was note opposed to its gradual abolition. She said, “I am happy to do it in a staged way, I just think we need to move the stages on a little quicker than they have been moving.” Trades Hall secretary Leigh Hubbard said since casinos were also workplaces, there should be no smoking, and many casinos were already taking steps to become smoke free.
