Bettors Rush to Bet on England Triumph

11 June 2002

ENGLAND – As reported by the Shropshire Star: "Confidence among the Shropshire public on England's chances of lifting the World Cup have been reflected by a flood of people gambling on the team's success, say bookmakers.

"The odds on Sven-Goran Eriksson's players winning the tournament have been slashed since the Argentina victory.

"At William Hill - which has 10 shops in the county - punters are currently being offered 6/1 on an England victory in Japan.

"And Ladbrokes - who have four shops in the Telford area - are offering 7/1 for David Beckham to hold the World Cup trophy aloft at the end of the month.

"Before Friday's historic win over arch rivals Argentina the team's chances were being quoted at 16/1, but were cut by more than 50 per cent following Beckham's penalty hit the net.

"…A spokesman for William Hill said that the company's betting shops had been opening at 9.30am - 45 minutes earlier - to allow people the chance to gamble on the mid-morning and lunchtime games.

"…`There has been a great deal of interest and we have had hundreds of first callers wanting to know how to place their bets,' he said."
