Bettors Back Larry Brown As Next Knicks Coach

20 July 2005

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Shortly after the terms of the Pistons buyout of Larry Brown's contract were made public yesterday evening, leading Internet sports book opened betting on where the nomadic Hall of Fame coach will roam the sidelines next season. Speculation on Brown filling the Knicks head coaching vacancy has never been higher and bettors are already backing the Long Island native to return to coach his hometown team.

With health questions remaining, opened wagering with the odds that Brown would not be a NBA head coach at the start of next season as a 2/5 favorite while the odds that Larry Brown would take over as head coach for the New York Knicks were second at 9/4. Since betting opened has seen nearly every bet placed backing Brown as the next Knicks coach, moving the odds on the coach roaming the sidelines at Madison Square Garden to an overwhelming 1/2 favorite. Meanwhile the odds that Brown will opt not to coach in the NBA next season have fallen to second favorite status at 8/5 odds. The odds that Larry Brown would become the coach of any other NBA franchise at the start of next season opened as an 11/1 long shot and has since drifted further to 17/1.

"Very rarely do we see such dramatic line movement, but with nearly all bets placed backing Brown as the next head coach of the Knicks we had to react quickly to reflect the solid public support he has received," said Simon Noble of "With the Knicks keeping the post open until Brown's status was known and the coach acknowledging that becoming the New York head coach is his 'dream job', our players seem to believe the two sides will make a perfect match."
