Bettor Hoping for 80/1 Payday With Edmonton Stanley Cup Victory

5 June 2006

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao – (PRESS RELEASE) -- When the Stanley Cup Finals between Edmonton and Carolina begin tonight, at least one bettor will be hoping to strike it rich with an Oilers victory. The Ontario, Canada-based player had the foresight to wager $150 on Edmonton to win the NHL championship in early October when had the team listed as an 80/1 long shot to win the Stanley Cup. Now only four wins away from capturing their sixth title in franchise history, the bettor is close to cashing a winning ticket for an amazing $12,000 return at

Returning to the ice for the first time since the 2003-04 season, originally opened Edmonton at 35/1 to win the Stanley Cup, but after receiving no wagers on the Oilers, the team's championship odds drifted all the way out to 80/1. At that time the bettor took a chance, dug deep and may have struck liquid gold by putting $150 on the Oilers being the team that would hoist Lord Stanley's Cup.

Even after qualifying for the NHL Playoffs, the Oilers remained a 70/1 long shot to win the Cup as they entered the postseason as the eighth seed in the Western Conference and had to face the league's top team in Detroit.

"Whenever a long shot defies the odds and comes close to winning a major sports championship, you'll find a handful of bettors who took a chance on the underdog and now await a big potential payday," said Simon Noble of "Cinderella stories are usually reserved for the NCAA tournament, but an Oilers Cup victory will prove fairy tales can come true as Edmonton would become the lowest seeded team ever to capture the NHL championship."
