Betting Opens on the 75th Academy Awards

Casting couch lovelies and Best Picture nomination favorites are: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gangs of New York, and Road to Perdition.

The Hobbits are looking hot and -- at 1-5 -- The Two Towers is the favorite to receive a nomination for Best Picture award. Expect to see hairy feet treading the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre on March 23rd, 2003.

Pre-release hysteria surrounding Scorsese's epic Gangs of New York means Irish eyes will probably be smiling, as the film is almost certain to receive a nomination.

Road to Perdition is also highly fancied -- which means there is no escaping for Oscar night MVP Tom Hanks and director Sam 'Midas Touch' Mendes.

In the 'Don't Call Us -- We'll Call You' category are Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, and We Were Soldiers.

Scooby-Doo -- at 100-1 to receive a nomination -- is all bark and no bite, Harry Potter lacks magic, and We Were Soldiers should be taken outside and shot, according to bet makers at Intertops.com.

"Intertops.com always offers bets on the Oscars. This year, we are opening the book on the nominations for the Best Picture Award," said Intertops.com Chief Bet Manager Michael Maerz.

"The nominations are more difficult to call because this is where the judges can be more political. Road to Perdition is a great example: the film has had mixed reviews and probably won't win the big prize -- but it looks certain to receive a nomination.

"Scorsese's Gangs of New York hasn't even been released yet but we think it will definitely receive a nomination. It's got to be worth a bet," he added.

"Perhaps the judges will throw the dog a bone and give Scooby a snack. If the judges decide to give those troublesome kids a break, you could win $1,000 from a $10 bet," he said.
