Betting Changes will Hurt Iowa Track

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "If you're betting on a quarter horse race at Prairie Meadows, you might want to be as quick as your horse.

"Starting Tuesday, quarter horse fans will have to make their bets earlier. Betting will end once the first quarter horse enters the starting gate. Traditionally, betting is taken until the race begins.

"The change was ordered by Prairie Meadows stewards after Dash Royal Fleet won the 10th race on Aug. 10. The horse was 11-1 when the race started, but only 4-1 when the final odds were shown.

"His odds plunged because of a last-second $500 bet made at a Texas simulcasting outlet.

"…So the stewards are ending betting once the horses begin entering the gate. It won't prevent last-second $500 bets from drastically changing the odds, but the final totals should be on display before the race is run.

"…Because betting is heaviest in the final two minutes, Prairie Meadows officials say the rule will result in lower wagering…"
