BetMGM awarded temporary Category 3 sports betting license in MA

20 December 2022

(PRESS RELEASE) -- During yesterday’s public meeting of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) where BetMGM presented and Commissioners reviewed that entity’s application for a sports wagering operator license, Commissioners voted unanimously to find BetMGM preliminarily suitable for a temporary Category 3 sports wagering operator license.

Conditions were placed on this vote requiring BetMGM to provide timely and ongoing updates regarding any developments to two confidential investigations first reported to the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau on 16 December 2022. Additionally, BetMGM must provide the MGC with a vendor diversity list.

This Category 3 license would be tethered to the Category 1 license awarded to MGM Springfield during this meeting.

The MGC set a goal to launch retail sports wagering in late January 2023 and online/mobile sports wagering in March 2023.

BetMGM is now eligible to request a temporary license to conduct sports wagering while a full suitability review is undertaken by the MGC. Following a temporary license being granted, BetMGM must obtain an operations certificate and meet additional conditions before they can accept wagers on approved sporting events. More information on a universal launch for retail wagering, followed by online wagering will be released as it becomes available.
