Bethlehem Casino Planners Aim for License

BETHLEHEM , Pennsylvania -- As reported by the Pennsylvania Express Times: "City council's refusal Tuesday to ban slots allows the city's would-be casino developers to focus on getting a needed state license. City officials, meanwhile, plan to focus on ensuring the developers keep their word that won them the support of council and many residents.

"BethWorks Now plans an $879-million redevelopment of former Bethlehem Steel Corp. land into a casino-anchored entertainment, retail and residential complex.

"Councilman Robert Donchez praised the developers' casino partner, The Venetian, for making 14 commitments to the city in a letter to city residents.

"One commitment is to incorporate into the redevelopment up to 23 structures on the former Steel land known as the Bethlehem Works. The Venetian also said it plans to build the complex with union workers from the Northampton, Pike and Monroe Counties Building & Construction Trades Council.

"…BethWorks Now principal Michael Perrucci said he supports Councilwoman Magdalena Szabo's request to let a council member participate in the review of development plans…"
