Bermuda Tourism Minister Supports Legalized Gambling28 October 2003BERMUDA -- As reported by the Bermuda Royal Gazette: "News that Tourism Minister Renee Webb was personally supportive of legalising gaming in Bermuda has been heartily welcomed by at least one ruling party supporter. "Ms Webb told the broadcast media last week that she was supportive of the Island getting into the gaming industry, but cautioned that that did not mean it would have the support of her Cabinet colleagues. "'I'm heartened by the fact that two Ministers over the last two days have at least called for a broader discussion on the issue of gambling in general, specifically the Tourism Minister has come out in favour of casinos and Dale Butler has endorsed national lottery,' businessman and Progressive Labour Party supporter Mr. Commissiong said. "Mr. Butler, however, said that he was supportive of a 'fact-finding discussion' on a national lottery, but the party had reiterated that it would not be budging right now from its policy against a national lottery. "...'The PLP's official stand is not to consider a lottery at all. There are some members who would like to consider it.' "Mr. Commissiong claims that resistance to national gambling within the rank and file is waning. "...And he urged Government to repeal the law on electronic gaming machines which prohibits the importation of new machines and their spare parts and bans them completely as of next year..." |
