Bennett: My Gambling Was a Sin

28 July 2003

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina – As reported by the Associated Press: “Outspoken family-values advocate William Bennett, a former U.S. education secretary, says he considers his casino gambling a sin.

“Bennett, who was education secretary under President Reagan and drug policy director for the President George H.W. Bush, told an evangelical Christian news magazine he doesn't consider all gambling a sin.

“It was a sin for Bennett, he said, `because it was a bad use of time and resources.

“`Mortal sin? Venial sin? Something in the middle? I have no idea. But excess, for sure,’ he said in the Aug. 9 issue of World magazine, based in Asheville.

“Bennett swore off casinos in May following stories by Newsweek and The Washington Monthly that detailed his gambling.

“The magazines cited internal casino documents showing Bennett to be a `preferred customer’ in at least four casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

“…Bennett told World he realized he had let down some people who had relied on him for moral guidance…”
