Beijing Reopens Internet Cafes

BEIJING, China – As reported by the Associated Press: "Thirty Beijing Internet cafes closed as part of a citywide crackdown are reopening after passing safety tests, state media reported.

"They are the first of the city's 2,400 Net bars given government approval to resume business after a fire killed 25 customers at an Internet cafe in Beijing's university district last month.

"…The cafes will operate under strict new regulations, China Youth Daily said: Smoking and underage customers will be banned, cafes must close by midnight and have unbarred windows and fire extinguishers, and all computer users must register.

"Pornography, violent content or gambling will not be allowed, in line with China's already stringent controls on Internet content…"
