Beijing Police Arrest Prostitutes And Gamblers

5 February 1997

BEIJING -- In their latest crackdown on pornographic materials and gambling activities, police in the Chinese capital have arrested 12 people accused of acting as pimps or of gambling.

Police also sent ten prostitutes and customers of brothels for re-education through labor, and revoked licenses of ten night clubs that were found to be providing pornographic or gambling services, authorities announced on Wednesday.

"There are still lots of problems in Beijing's entertainment spots in spite of the police crackdown on prostitution and gambling," Zhang Liangji, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security, pointed out.

More than 3,000 cultural and entertainment centers have appeared recently in Beijing along with the economic growth and improved standard of living.

"Some businessmen disregard the laws and become involved in illegal deals in pursuit of exorbitant profits," Zhang said, noting that the police will continue their efforts to stop illegal business practices and clean up the culture market.
