BC Track Loses Slot Support

BRITISH COLUMBIA – As reported by the Victoria Times Colonist: "North Saanich council has yanked its support for slot machines at Sandown racetrack, but on the other hand eagerly invites redevelopment plans which will include ... slot machines.

"The odd compromise responds to concerns over a big casino company buying Sandown -- news that didn't come out until well after a Nov. 6 referendum voted 57 per cent yes for slots.

"Two weeks ago, Coun. Anny Scoones had councillors ready to revoke support for slots, but they waited for a legal report on whether they might be sued for damages.

"…But they stopped short of calling a new referendum and decided to wait for a redevelopment plan from Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which now calls the shots at Sandown…"
