BC Capital to Consider Casino Public Hearing14 January 2005VICTORIA, British Columbia – As reported by the Victoria Times Colonist: "Under threat of a lawsuit, Victoria council will consider a public hearing on a casino proposal from businessman John Asfar even though the project does not have provincial approval. "However, Asfar's group must meet a variety of conditions before the public hearing can go ahead. "…The conditions include Asfar providing information on a variety of issues including traffic and social impact in the area of the planned casino at Douglas Street and Queens Avenue. "Council also wants the B.C. Lottery Corp. to clarify some issues relating to the Gaming Control Act before going ahead with any public hearing. "…Council discussed in private the possibility of a public hearing Thursday night after lawyers for Asfar's Vancouver Island Entertainment Inc. warned that otherwise, the company would take the city to court. "Asfar's lawyers sent three letters threatening litigation, the last just before council was due to begin its meeting…" |
