BBC Documents Gambling Addiction Struggle

10 June 2003

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the BBC: “A BBC documentary lifts the lid on former England star Paul Merson's desperate struggle to overcome his gambling addiction.

“Premiership Priory follows Merson as he checks into Tony Adams' Sporting Chance Clinic in a final attempt to stop his addiction spiralling out of control.

“Unprecedented camera access to Adams' clinic exposes the depths of Merson's problems as he tries lead Portsmouth into the Premiership.

“…Adams allowed the documentary to go ahead in a bid to secure much-needed funding for the clinic - as he reduces his own financial commitment to the cause.

“The programme follows his attempts to convince sport's governing bodies to give the charity the money it needs to survive.

“Merson, 35, tells how he contemplated suicide as his addiction got worse, bringing back painful memories of his previous battles with drink and drugs.

“…The show is presented by BBC Five Live presenter Mark Pougatch.”
