Baseball's Ultimate Punishment3 February 2003Most everyone knows about Pete Rose and the "Eight Men Out," but they're not the only men who have been slapped with baseball's ultimate punishment. Eight decades after Kenesaw Mountain Landis became the first commissioner of Major League Baseball and began wielding his unchallenged authority to clean up the game, 20 men remain banned for life. All but one earned their place on baseball's blacklist through gambling-related misconduct. All but one, Rose, were kicked out of the game by the tyrannical Landis, a federal judge hired by the owners to police the sport following the 1920 season.
