Barona Casino Announces Major Expansion Plans14 January 1999Barona Casino, already one of the largest Indian casinos in California, will soon undergo a $120 million expansion that will more than double its size. The circus-themed casino will eventually expand to more than 450,000 square-feet. Two new "big tops," a hotel/lodge and an 18-hole world-class golf course, will be added. The renovated resort will feature a 13,000 square-foot celestial-themed entrance rotunda, equipped with a 45-foot working carousel and themed retail stores; a 56,000 square-foot main gaming big top with a celestial ringmaster, flying circus-themed contraptions, highwire animatronics and a center ring with live entertainment; a secondary 56,000 square-foot entertainment big top with a new bingo facility, including a grand ballroom; and a new rustic hotel lodge, constructed from natural wood timbers and planks, which will include over 250 rooms a cafe seating around 150, and banquet and meeting facilities totaling more than 20,000 square feet of function space. The original big top, built in 1994 will be expanded to feature a 20,000 square-foot Las Vegas-style buffet with a Victorian town square theme and a gazebo centerpiece, which will serve as a dessert station. There will also be a new 7,300 square-foot off-track betting facility (including a new restaurant), an adult arcade, a VIP lounge and a childcare area. "We are thrilled to announce the expansion plans for the casino and look forward to bringing the finest in entertainment and gaming to San Diego," said Clifford La Chappa, chairman of the Barona Band of Mission Indians. "The growth of the casino will be beneficial to the Barona tribe, casino employees, and the community of San Diego by creating more than 600 new jobs and significantly contribute to the local economy." Barona Casino, which currently offers 115,000 square-feet of alcohol-free gaming and hospitality space, is owned and operated by the Barona Band of Mission Indians. Barona is located on approximately 5,500 acres in rural eastern San Diego County and is home to approximately 300 people. |
