Banff to Keep VLTs For Now15 July 2002CANADA - As reported by the Calgary Herald: ``Banff has backed away from its threat to yank VLTs out of the tourist town's businesses. ``Instead, the municipality will monitor the legal cases underway in other communities seeking to remove video lottery terminals and will track the success of a new $30-million provincial community grant program. ``.After the provincial government axed community lottery boards in March, Banff threatened to remove all VLTs from the town to retaliate against what it called an ongoing cash grab by the province. ``The province recently replaced the boards with a $30-million community grant program. ``Council called on administration to investigate how VLTs could be removed unless gambling funds from both lottery ticket sales and the VLTs were directed to the municipality. ``The town examined several alternatives, including holding a plebiscite, but decided to take no action to remove Banff's 27 VLTs at this time. ``Businesses are pleased council has backed away from its threat." |
