Bally's Hotel-Casino to Hit South Africa

14 July 1997

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Johnnies Industrial Corp. Limited and Hilton Hotels Corp. have submitted a proposal to the Gauteng Gambling and Betting Board for a major hotel-casino-entertainment complex in Gauteng Province.

The proposed project will be a joint venture between Johnnic Casino Holdings and Conrad International Hotels Corp.-SA and an empowerment trust aimed primarily at previously disadvantaged individuals, communities and enterprises.

The proposal, which has an anticipated project cost of R2.0 billion ($438 million (U.S.)), includes a 432-room, five-star hotel (with potential expansion to 1,000 rooms); 10,000-square-meter casino with 2,000 slot machines and 71 table games; 7,500-seat multi-purpose arena for concerts, sporting events and exhibitions; 1,200-seat showroom; 5,000-square-meter "Edutainment Center" promoting education to South African youth in a museum environment; movie theater complex, and a variety of restaurants and lounges.

The complex, to be named "Bally's Hotel and Casino at Gallagher Estate," would be developed adjacent to the famous Gallagher Estate, the largest and best-known international conference and exhibition center in South Africa.
