Back to the Future For Arlington Park

23 October 2000

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois – (Press Release) -- Oct. 23, 2000-- When the American Jockey Club christened the new racetrack northwest of Chicago as Arlington Park in 1927, it was the first chapter in a colorful history of triumphs for the world-famous Thoroughbred racing destination. Today, almost three-quarters of a century later, the racetrack has returned to its original name and unveiled a new logo in preparation for the 2001 race season.

Since its reopening in 1989 as ``Arlington International Racecourse'' after a devastating fire destroyed the original facility, Arlington has showcased horse racing experiences in an elegant and first-class environment.

``The new facility has introduced horse racing to thousands of new fans, while the park-like setting has helped longtime fans stay connected to their warm memories of Arlington Park,'' said Scott Mordell, Arlington's president and chief executive officer. ``Arlington Park offers much more to friends and families than a typical racetrack. Including `Park' in our name signifies the wide range of special experiences available to our fans.''

The new logo highlights Arlington's recent stock merger with Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN),(``CDI''), which was completed last month. The green Twin Spires of Churchill Downs have been added to the new identity of Arlington Park to symbolize the union of horse racing's most recognized and preeminent brands.

The Twin Spires logo is an abstract depiction of the internationally recognized landmark that was constructed atop Churchill Downs in 1895. CDI introduced the logo design in February 2000 when the Company established a nationwide branding program for all of its racetracks and off-track betting locations.

``Arlington Park's reputation and commitment to quality fits perfectly with the tradition of excellence associated with Churchill Downs and its premier event, the Kentucky Derby,'' Mordell said. ``The market strength of our combined resources will enable us to better showcase Illinois horse racing to fans around the world.''
