Austrian Legislation

2 April 1997

According to an article in the Wirtschafts Blatt (1/31/1997), since Jan. 1st, 1997, the Austrian Government have passed an amendment to an existing law concerning games of chance (casino/lottery related gambling). Some European observers feel that the intention is to forbid gambling on the Internet by Austrian citizens with foreign Web sites in order to protect the State licensed monopoly on games of chance.

The Treasury Department's aim is reported to deny access for any foreign gambling concerns on the World Wide Web to Austria. In the future, the Austrian Internet providers will be held responsible for the actions of their subscribers by introducing a form of screening against non-Austrian gambling/lottery sites.

Rumor has it that Casino Salzburg (which is part of the Casinos Austria group) may be looking to create an Internet site for themselves. Whether its intention is to use it for marketing or offer an online virtual casino, no one knows.
