Austrian Lauda Air Among the First with Inflight Gambling

18 September 1997

VIENNA, Austria -- In a Reuters news story, it was revealed that Austria's Lauda Air may be the first out of the shoot in getting the inflight gambling systems up and running. Founded by retired Formula 1 racing driver Niki Lauda is working in cooperation with Casinos Austria to carry roulette, black Jack, poker and slot machines on his new Boeing 777 -- dubbed "Lauda's flying wonderworld."

"Being a small airline in international terms we are as ever striving to be one step ahead through having consistently new creative and innovative ideas," Lauda said in the statement.

Gambling takes place at one's seat from a personal screen -- in economy class in the back of the seat in front or from the armrest in business class -- and is activated by credit card or the airline's "Fun Card."

The aircraft will fly three times a week starting Oct. 1 on the route Vienna - Singapore - Sydney - Melbourne - Singapore - Vienna.
