Australia's Poker Machine Freeze puts Casino Club Proposal in Doubt

6 February 2001

AUSTRALIA – Feb. 6, 2001 – As reported by the Age.com: "Plans for a $700 million gaming and sporting club in Sydney's south-west are in doubt, following a state government announcement to extend a statewide freeze on poker machines.

"…The 30-hectare Oasis development - to be built at Woodward Park near Liverpool - has been billed as the largest centre of its type in Australia.

"But the project - to be funded by Macquarie Bank and backed by the Bulldogs Leagues Club and Liverpool Council - hinges on the approval of 600 poker machines.

"…Meanwhile, New South Wales Opposition Leader Kerry Chikarovski said the proponents should seek ways other than gambling to fund their operations."
