Australia's Labor Party Opposes Online Gaming Moratorium5 September 2000AUSTRALIA—Sept. 5, 2000—As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald: "…In a Senate committee report tabled last night, the ALP joined the Democrats in rejecting a Federal Government plan for a 12-month moratorium on new services, backdated to May 19. "The ALP's minority report stated that a moratorium would only force operators of online casinos and sports betting agencies to move offshore and remove protections for consumers. "…The opposition of the two parties leaves the Government facing the task of negotiating a compromise with one of the parties or having its moratorium legislation defeated in the Senate. "During the Senate inquiry, there was overwhelming industry opposition to the Government's moratorium which would allow time for an inquiry into whether the domestic industry could be banned entirely…" |
