Australian Woman Guilty of Stealing to Feed Gambling Habit

AUSTRALIA – March 20, 2001 – As reported by the Australian Age.com: "A Melbourne mother who stole about $250,000 from her law firm employer to feed a "pathological" gambling habit was ordered to serve a minimum four months' jail in the County Court yesterday.

" In sentencing, Judge John Hassett said consideration was given to the fact that [Melissa Ann William] Williams, 29, stole the money due to an `addiction' that began as an `escape' from her unhappy marriage and not for financial benefit or as a means to improve her lifestyle.

"Judge Hassett said her gambling habit was compounded by the fact that gaming venues were among the few places where she believed her presence as a single woman was socially accepted…"
