Australian Survey Tries to Identify Needs of Problem Gamblers

"AUSTRALIA – July 3, 2001 – As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "In what is believed to be the first ever study of its kind, Canberra's problem gamblers are set to come face-to-face with researchers who will attempt to identify their individual needs.

"…The [Australian Institute of Gambling Research] executive director, Jan McMillian, says the survey has found the problem is of growing concern and hopes face-to-face interviews will improve the ways in which effective responses to addiction can be found.

"…`Instead of experts from a position above...actually making a decision in advance and saying, "this is what we think the community needs", this is a chance for the community to actually express their voice.'…"
