Australian State Proposes Kids Raffle Ban

QUEENSLAND, Australia –- Nov. 18, 2001 –- As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "Queensland children could be banned from playing chocolate wheels or taking part in raffles or lucky dips because of fears they could end up hardened gamblers.

"The proposals are outlined in a state government discussion paper on gambling which would not only hit the popular activities at school fetes, but would ban minors from Melbourne Cup sweeps, bingo and cent auctions.

"…But Opposition Leader Mike Horan said the government should leave the kids alone.

"…He said school fetes were well supervised events and if the government was concerned about kids becoming problem gamblers it should inject money into special education programs which could be used at fetes to warn children of the dangers of gambling…"
