Australian Senate to Vote on Internet Gaming26 June 2001AUSTRALIA – June 26, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: "The Senate is expected to vote on the government's controversial internet gaming ban today after weeks of negotiations with minor parties. "During recent discussions, the government agreed to exempt horseracing, sports betting and lotteries from their legislation which aims to ban online gaming for Australian residents. "…Communications Minister Richard Alston said today he hoped all senators would now support the bill. "…Senator Alston said he was disappointed the Labor Party was not taking the issue seriously. "…Newsagents' need not be concerned online lotto would be allowed under the bill, Senator Alston said. "`The overseas experience in relation to other lottery products suggests that there really isn't any significant transfer from the retail sector to the cyber sector,' he said. "`That is because people still overwhelmingly prefer going to their local newsagents and buying their tickets when they need them.'" |
