Australian Senate Likely to Exempt Sports and Race Wagers from Online Betting Ban

AUSTRALIA —– As reported by the Australia Age.com: "The Federal Government is likely to have its Internet gambling ban passed in the Senate if it agrees to exempt betting on sports and horse racing.

"Crucial casting votes in the Senate hang on exempting wagering from the ban, and wagering giants such as Victoria's Tabcorp are quietly confident they will prevail.

"Greens senator Bob Brown said the exemption of wagering was a condition he wanted to see fulfilled in the legislation.

"…Senator Woodley said yesterday that if exempting wagering was the only way to secure Senator Brown's vote and the legislation, they would support it.

"…But in a potential setback, it appears Country Liberal Party senator Grant Tambling will also be urged - by his party - to vote against the bill in its present form because of the harm it could do to wagering organisations in his Northern Territory constituency.

"Tabcorp, in a submission to a Senate inquiry on the matter, has supported the Internet gaming ban but argues that wagering should be exempted as it does not qualify as interactive gambling…"
