Australian Regulation Give Communities More Control

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australia) Age: "Councils and community groups have welcomed State Government moves to give councils a greater say over the number of poker machines in their areas.

"New legislation will require gaming operators to get a council permit before applying to the gambling regulator to open a gaming venue or to boost the number of machines at an existing venue.

"A permit is now required only where gaming machines occupy more than 25 per cent of the floor space.

"…Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos said the changes fulfilled an election promise to give more power over poker machines to local communities.

"..Industry spokesmen said it was unlikely the number of machines would fall…"
