Australian Province, Prison Combat Problem Gambling

23 July 2003

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Bendigo Advertiser: “The Victorian Government and Loddon Prison have joined forces to combat problem gambling.

“Community Services Minister Sherryl Garbutt launched a new program called Inside Out in Bendigo yesterday.

“…Ms Garbutt said problem gambling affected all communities, but its effects were more apparent in regional areasntsa , where recreational options might be limited.

“Bendigo Health Care Services, which runs the state government-funded Gamblers Help program, developed the Inside Out training program and manual to help problem gamblers in jail.

“Loddon Prison will be the first in Victoria to trial Inside Out.

“Statistics indicate problem gambling is the reason a significant proportion of prisoners find themselves in jail, and anecdotal evidence suggests gambling addictions can be developed and maintained while people are incarcerated…”
