Australian Province Defends Tax Grab

11 March 2003

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australian) Advertiser: "The Victorian Government's increasing tax revenue was due to a buoyant economy spurred on by the housing boom, Premier Steve Bracks has said.

"A report released by the Commonwealth Grants Commission today showed Victoria was collecting the country's highest gambling and property taxes and spending more on welfare than any other state.

"…Mr Bracks today said the increased tax collection was due to economic activity, with the Victorian economy growing 4.9 per cent compared to 3.9 per cent nationally last financial year.

"…Mr Bracks said Victoria's increasing level of gambling taxes was due to a higher taxation rate.

"He said the state had fewer gaming machines per head of population than NSW."
