Australian Problem Gambling Group Welcomes Gaming Reforms30 November 2001AUSTRALIA—Nov. 30, 2001 –As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "The president of the New South Wales Council on Problem Gambling says new gaming laws to go before Parliament today are one step along the road to undoing the harm created by the explosion in machine gaming. "The Government plans to cap the number of poker machines at 104,000 and will introduce a three hour daily ban on gaming at pubs and clubs to be increased to six hours in May 2003. "…[The Reverend Chester Carter from the Council on Problem Gambling said,] `For a person with a gambling problem, that reality check is sometimes just enough for them to get help, they may say "what have I done, I'll need to get help" or they'll go home because they not going to hang around for three hours waiting for the machines to come back on,'…" |
