Australian Minister Accused of Conflict of Interest over Internet Gaming Legislation7 March 2001CANBERRA, Australia — As reported by Computer Daily News:"The Australian Government of Liberal Prime Minister John Howard will attempt to bluff out revelations that Arts Minister Peter McGauran had a potential conflict of interest last year when he piloted legislation establishing a ban on Internet gambling through the House of Representatives. "The Australian Labor Party Opposition claimed that McGauran stood to gain from the legislation, since his family company - which operates a hotel in Altona, Melbourne - is the owner of 70 poker (slot) machines. "It claims that limiting Internet gambling - as the ban does - has benefited holders of existing forms of gambling, including poker machine licensees…" |
