Australian Government Rejects Poker Machine Exemptions Reversal23 April 2003AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "The NSW Government is planning more measures to attack problem gambling but has rejected calls to reverse the exemptions to the six-hour shutdown period for poker machines at weekends. "Fifty-three pubs and clubs have applied to the Liquor Administration Board for an exemption, which reduces the shutdown to three hours. "Fifteen have been granted the exemption, one has been refused, and 35 are awaiting a decision. "More pubs and clubs are understood to be waiting for support from their council before applying. "...Gaming operators have been lobbying for months to have the six-hour ban overturned, saying it would have a bad impact on their business..." |
